Kernel Testing as an Alternative to χ Analysis for Investigating the Distribution of Quantitative Traits

چکیده
Chi-square analysis is a popular means of analyzing data from inheritance studies. Such an analysis, though, can be inappropriate when the phenotypic characteristic under study is a continuous variable. We argue that arbitrary categorization of continuous variables can either seriously invalidate or make powerless a chi-square goodness-of-fit test. We propose an alternative test based on kernel density estimates. The test makes no assumption about the underlying distribution of the phenotypic variables. Furthermore, kernel density estimates provide an appealing means of describing the distribution of continuous variables.

Study of Pollen Effects on some Quantitative Characteristics of Hazelnut Cultivars (Corylus avellana) in East of Guilan
Pollination is very important for achieving an economical production in hazelnuts. This study was conducted as a factorial randomized complete block design with three replications. In this study, the effects of three pollinizers (Pashmineh, Gercheh and Shastak) on nut and kernel characteristics of some hazelnut cultivars (Rounde, Fertilede coutard and Gerdeshkvarat) were investigated. The resu...
متن کاملInvestigating the Effects of Urea, Azocompost and Cutting on Quantitative and Qualitative Characteristics of Oregano (Origanum Vulgare Virid)
In order to investigate the effect of urea, Azocompost and cutting on growth characteristics of Oregano, a factorial split-plot experiment was conducted based on randomized complete block design with three replications at Yazd and Mashhad, Iran, during 2012-2013 growing season. Four urea levels and four Azocompost levels (to provide 0, 40, 80 and 120 kg N.ha-1 each) for Yazd location )0, 43.5, ...

متن کاملLikelihood ratio testing for admixture models with application to genetic linkage analysis.
We consider likelihood ratio tests (LRT) and their modifications for homogeneity in admixture models. The admixture model is a two-component mixture model, where one component is indexed by an unknown parameter while the parameter value for the other component is known. This model is widely used in genetic linkage analysis under heterogeneity in which the kernel distribution is binomial. For su...
متن کاملQuantitative studies for investigating variation and its effect on heterosis of rice
An important step in plant breeding programs is identification of parents that are geneticallydistant from each other, to find crossing combinations with better prospects of hybrid vigor. Thepotential of identifying genetically distant parents depends on genetic diversity of population. 58 linesof rice from diverse origins have been employed to study genetic variation in order to identify themo...
